Undergraduate Program

Food Engineering Department admits students based on the specific preference listing of the candidates and their success in the one-stage Nationwide University Entrance Examination (ÖSS) which is administered by the National Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM) in Turkey. The number of applicants to this exam was approximately 1,800,000 in 2003. ITU Food Engineering Department admits students with quite high scores, representing the top 1.0 - 4.0% of those placed in the 4-year institutions.  The Food Engineering Department has been ranked as the first best, based on the ÖSS examination scores among the other food engineering departments of 23 universities in Turkey in 2003.

Each year, around 30 students are admitted to the Food Engineering program, in addition to 1 or 2 high school valedictorians. The total number of registered undergraduate students is currently 168, and 35% of those students are male. The program was reviewed by ABET team in October 2003.

Undergraduate Curriculum 

Transfer Students

International applicants must take the Foreign Students' Entrance Examination (YÖS) in English or Turkish, which is also administered by ÖSYM. The Board of Admissions at ÖSYM evaluates the YÖS-exam results to determine eligibility for enrollment.  ITU Food Engineering Department also accepts students with a minimum GPA of 3.00 from other departments of ITU to receive a second undergraduate diploma in the Double Major Program.  

Graduate Program

The Food Engineering Department offers Master of Science (M.Sc.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree programs in Food Engineering.

The objective of the M.Sc. program is  to provide an education for students to develop their knowledge in the area of food engineering and, also, to demonstrate abilities for carrying out a scientific research through collection and evaluation of data and then discussion of the results in the light of current literature.

The objective of the Ph.D. program is to provide an education for students to expand the depth and breadth of their food engineering background and to demonstrate abilities to do research independently through justification of scientific events and determination of further steps to reach new synthesis. 

There are totally 63 graduate students pursuing Master of Science or Doctorate degree in Food Engineering.
